Eze Ekwueme’s Killing: A Case for Thorough Investigation, Not Hasty Judgment

Our Reporter

The tragic killing of HRH Eze Paulinus Ekwueme, the traditional ruler of Ochia Autonomous Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, raises troubling questions that demand urgent and thorough investigation. What occurred on April 10, 2026, should not be dismissed as a mere act of violence, but carefully examined as a possible conspiracy rooted in deep-seated community tensions.

While the visit of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Bosso Garba, to the scene is a welcome step, it is only the beginning. Security agencies must go further to uncover the circumstances that led to the gruesome murder of a monarch described by many as peaceful, intellectual, and committed to dialogue.

Eze Ekwueme was not only a traditional ruler but also a trained lawyer, journalist, and former President-General of Awara Autonomous Community. His leadership journey was marked by initiative and vision, particularly in securing autonomous status for Ochia Community—a move that ultimately led to his emergence as its traditional ruler with the support of key stakeholders.

However, his reign was not without controversy. Tensions reportedly existed between Ochia and neighbouring groups, especially over issues of host community rights linked to oil exploration activities by Walter Smith Oil Company. Disputes over inclusion, control, and benefits appear to have deepened divisions within and around the community.

In the wake of his death, social media has been awash with allegations portraying the monarch in a negative light, including claims of financial misconduct and complicity in violence. These accusations, however, remain unproven and risk distorting public perception. It is important to emphasize that financial dealings involving oil companies and host communities are typically governed by agreements requiring multiple signatories, not unilateral control by a traditional ruler.

Reports indicate that the late monarch had spent several years abroad, particularly in the United States, and had returned home to celebrate Easter with his people. He was allegedly lured back to Ochia for a meeting, only to be ambushed, overpowered, and brutally killed alongside others, with their vehicle set ablaze. If true, this points to a premeditated act that must not go unpunished.

To uncover the truth, investigators must scrutinize all available evidence. This includes obtaining the minutes of the meeting he was invited to attend, identifying those present, and examining any existing disputes within the community. Additionally, the oil company operating in the area should be required to transparently disclose its dealings with the community and its leadership.

There are also claims of a longstanding power struggle over traditional authority, particularly involving factions from Umuokuzu, who allegedly contested the legitimacy of Eze Ekwueme’s stool. If such tensions existed, they may provide important context for understanding the events leading to his death.

What is clear is that Eze Ekwueme can no longer defend himself against the allegations now circulating. It would be unjust to allow narratives—whether driven by rivalry or misinformation—to define his legacy without a fair and comprehensive inquiry.

The people of Ochia Autonomous Community owe it to themselves, and to the memory of their monarch, to cooperate fully with investigations and present an honest account of what transpired. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.

Until the truth is established, this tragic incident should be treated not as a closed case, but as a serious matter requiring transparency, accountability, and justice.

Justice for Eze Ekwueme.
