By Anselem Anokwute

The Imo State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has concluded arrangements to honour Governor Hope Uzodimma in recognition of what it described as his transformational leadership and road infrastructural strides in the state.

Addressing journalists in Owerri on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the State Chairman of NURTW, Comrade Ikenga Jeff Eze (Olumo Imo), said the union resolved to celebrate the governor for creating an enabling environment for economic growth and improved road transportation through the construction of numerous urban and rural road projects across the state.

Comrade Eze noted that the governor’s six years in office have witnessed remarkable improvements, particularly in road infrastructure, which he said have positively impacted the economic wellbeing of transport operators and residents.

According to him, Governor Uzodimma’s stewardship as the state marks its 50th anniversary is significant, describing it as a “divine arrangement.” He added that the union is proud to identify with what it termed the administration’s positive contributions to the development of Imo State.

He called on Ndi Imo and transport operators to participate in the celebration in honour of what he described as a dynamic, visionary and pragmatic leader.

On the planned event, the NURTW chairman disclosed that members of the union would embark on a road walk, converging at the Dan Anyiam Stadium and proceeding to the Government House, Douglas House, to express their appreciation for the governor’s leadership. He said the procession would feature musical instruments and other displays to convey the union’s gratitude.

Eze urged members to ensure full participation in the event scheduled for Friday, February 13, 2026, noting that the road projects executed by the administration have reduced travel time, lowered vehicle maintenance costs and improved accessibility for commuters across the state.

He also clarified that the NURTW is not an appendage of the State Ministry of Transport but an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), although it operates under the supervision of the ministry.

Citing available statistics, he stated that more than 316 road networks have been completed by the Uzodimma administration since inception.

Among those present at the briefing were the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Chief Emeka Okoronkwo, represented by the Director of Administration and Finance, Mr Ben Uwakwe; a former State Chairman of the union, Comrade Bora Okebaram; and the Chief of Staff, Hon. Alvan Opara and many others.

Speaking at the event, the NURTW Imo State Chief of Staff, Comrade Alvan Opara used the medium to called on the media and the public to report any misconduct by perceived union members, as well as the activities of impostors allegedly saboteurs from unsuspecting members of the public. He said special contact lines had been provided for such reports.
