NURTW Commends Governor Uzodimma for Construction of Three Modern Motor Parks.

…Appeals for Government Empowerment Intervention for Members.

By Anselem Anokwute in Owerri

The Imo State chapter of the, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has commended the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for embarking on the construction of three ultra-modern motor parks, within the Owerri Municipal Council area.

According to the Union, the initiative represents a major step toward improving transportation infrastructure in the state and alleviating the difficulties faced by passengers and drivers operating in the capital city.

The commendation was made by the State Chairman of NURTW, Comrade Jeff Eze (popularly known as Ikenga Laajeff), during an interaction with journalists in Owerri.

He described the Governor’s gesture as “a clear demonstration of responsive leadership and people-oriented governance.”

Comrade Eze noted that the new motor parks, when completed, would provide a safe, organized, and hygienic environment for commuters, transport operators, and traders, thereby enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of Owerri’s transport system.

> “We sincerely appreciate His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for his magnanimity and pragmatic decision to establish three standard motor parks in Owerri. This project will go a long way to reduce the stress our drivers and passengers experience daily,”
Comrade Eze stated.

The Union Appeals for Empowerment and Government Support inline with the Governor’s political mantra of shared prosperity.

While applauding the government’s infrastructural strides, the NURTW chairman appealed for empowerment interventions, from the state government to support union members.

He explained that NURTW members are not government employees but independent workers who contribute significantly to the state’s economy, particularly in the area of transport logistics and internal revenue generation.

Comrade Eze urged the state government to consider providing, grants, operational vehicles, and empowerment schemes, to ease the challenges faced by drivers and other transport workers, especially those operating under the union’s State Secretariat.

> “Our work is enormous and often capital-intensive. We seek the government’s assistance through grants, operational support, and vehicle donations to make our duties easier and more efficient,”
he added.

Addressing the issue of alleged road task forces, the NURTW chairman clarified that the union does not operate any enforcement task force on the roads, stressing that their activities are limited to monitoring the welfare of drivers and ensuring compliance with government transport policies.

He emphasized that the union is not involved in traffic management, one-way enforcement, or restrictions on heavy-duty vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles, as these responsibilities lie strictly with government agencies.

> “Our duty is to organize, educate, and sanitize our members in line with the ideals of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). We are committed to supporting government programs and policies that promote order, safety, and economic growth,”
Eze clarified.

Comrade Eze also recalled that the NURTW played a vital role during the elections period by conveying both sensitive and non-sensitive materials to remote and hard-to-reach areas, to ensuring the smooth conduct of the exercise across the State.

He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to maintaining peace, discipline, and cooperation with the state government in pursuit of policies that benefit both workers and the general public.

“We remain loyal to the state government and committed to contributing our quota to the development of Imo State,” Laajeff.
