LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY: SUPREME COURT RESERVES JUDGMENT IN FG’s SUIT.

The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in the Federal Government’s suit seeking full autonomy for the 774 local governments in Nigeria.

The suit, filed by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, seeks to grant local governments autonomy as a third tier of government.

The 36 state governors, through their respective Attorneys General and Commissioners for Justice, opposed the request and asked the court to dismiss the suit.

The AGF argued that the Federal Government is seeking to restore the true intention of the constitution, which grants autonomy to local governments.

The governors, however, argued that granting autonomy to local governments would undermine the principles of true federalism.

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has also expressed his opposition to LG autonomy, stating that it goes against the tenets of true federalism.

The Supreme Court’s 7-man panel, led by Justice Garba Lawal, reserved judgment after adopting the processes filed by both parties.

The court promised to communicate the judgment to the parties involved once it is ready.

The Federal Government’s suit seeks to restrain state governors from unilaterally dissolving democratically elected local government leaders.

The governors, however, argue that granting autonomy to local governments would lead to chaos and undermine their authority.

The case has sparked debate on the nature of federalism in Nigeria and the role of local governments in the country’s governance structure.

The Supreme Court’s judgment is eagerly awaited, as it could have far-reaching implications for the country’s political landscape.

The case has also highlighted the need for a review of the country’s constitution to clarify the role of local governments in Nigeria’s federal system.

Ultimately, the Supreme Court’s judgment will determine the fate of local government autonomy in Nigeria and shape the country’s governance structure for years to come.

The reserved judgment has left many eagerly awaiting the outcome, which could have significant implications for the country’s political future.
