STOP PRESS : NANS DEMANDS GOVERNOR UZODIMMA’S FULFILMENT OF 2023 MOTOR VEHICLE’S SUPPORT PROMISE
NANS ZONE F MOBILITY SUPPORT DEMAND: FORUM OF ALL ZONAL PROs BACKS IMO STUDENTS, CALLS FOR FULFILLMENT OF GOVERNOR UZODIMMA’S 2023 PROMISE
The Forum of All Zonal Public Relations Officers of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) expresses its unequivocal support for the position canvassed by the NANS Zone F Public Relations Officer, Comrade Ogbuehi Chikwado Pius, and student leaders across tertiary institutions in Imo State, calling on the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma, to fulfil the promise made in 2023 to provide vehicles and mobility support for student leadership structures in the state.
As Chairman of the Forum of All Zonal Public Relations Officers and the Public Relations Officer of NANS Zone D (South-West), I consider this appeal a legitimate and constructive demand that deserves the attention of the Imo State Government.
Student leaders occupy a critical position in the education ecosystem. They serve as the bridge between students, institutional authorities, government agencies and other stakeholders. Their responsibilities frequently require movement between campuses, government offices, security agencies, meetings and emergency situations. Consequently, mobility support should not be viewed as political patronage or an unnecessary privilege, but as an investment in effective student representation and responsible leadership.
The concerns raised by our colleagues in Imo State are particularly compelling because the requested support is reportedly tied to a commitment made by the state government in 2023. Where government makes a promise to the student community, fulfilling such a commitment is important not only for practical reasons but also for sustaining trust and confidence between government and students.
The reported difficulty faced by Imo student representatives in attending national and zonal engagements, including the NANS Leadership Senate sitting in Ebonyi State, demonstrates the practical consequences of inadequate mobility. Student leaders should not be placed in a position where transportation constraints prevent them from participating meaningfully in platforms where the interests and welfare of their constituents are discussed.
We therefore call on Governor Hope Uzodimma to revisit this commitment and take concrete steps towards its fulfilment. We believe that doing so would send a strong message that the Imo State Government values student leadership, recognises the role of students in governance and is committed to building a stronger partnership with the student community.
Beyond Imo State, we equally encourage other state governments across Nigeria to emulate any positive gesture that eases the operational burden of student leaders. State governments should deem it fit, within their available resources and established procedures, to provide appropriate mobility and logistical support for legitimate student leadership structures. Such support can significantly improve communication, representation, emergency response and constructive engagement between students and government.
We emphasise, however, that mobility support must be provided transparently and responsibly, with appropriate accountability mechanisms, so that it serves its intended purpose of advancing student welfare and representation.
The student community remains a vital constituency and an important partner in the development of our nation. Governments that invest in meaningful engagement with students today are strengthening the foundation for future collaboration, responsible citizenship and sustainable development.
We therefore urge the Imo State Government to honour its 2023 commitment and use this opportunity to reignite the confidence and support of the student community. We also encourage other state governments to adopt similar student-friendly initiatives that strengthen partnership rather than create unnecessary barriers between government and students.
The Forum of All Zonal PROs remains committed to constructive advocacy, responsible communication and the promotion of policies that advance the welfare, dignity and effective representation of Nigerian students.
