The Imo State University (IMSU) Pioneer Students Alumni Association has presented two motorised wheelchairs to their physically challenged members, as part of activities marking the end of its 2025 homecoming ceremony.

The association, made up of the institution’s first set of students following its relocation from Uturu to Owerri in 1992, said the gesture reflects its commitment to humanitarian service and the welfare of its members, particularly those living with disabilities and vulnerable ones.

Speaking during the presentation, the Alumni Chairman, Sir Chidi Obioha, described the donation as a significant highlight of the homecoming event. He noted that the 1992 set remains united and dedicated to supporting one another and contributing to the growth of the university.

Obioha recalled that the relocation of the institution to Owerri followed the creation of Abia State, which left Uturu outside Imo State. He explained that the then governor, Senator Evan Enwerem, facilitated the return of the university to Owerri, making his set the first graduates of IMSU in the state capital.

He added that the association deemed it necessary to support two of its members, Chief Barr. Benson Munaonye (Eligwe chambers Orlu) and Comrade Oparaku Onyejelem Jaja, who have lived with physical challenges since their school days. According to him, the provision of motorised wheelchairs would significantly improve their mobility and quality of life.

While presenting the wheelchairs, Obioha urged the beneficiaries to make good use of them, noting that age and health conditions had made movement more difficult over time.

Responding, Comrade Oparaku Onyejelem Jaja expressed deep appreciation to the association, describing the gift as heartfelt and impactful. He explained that as a polio survivor, his condition has worsened with age, leading to increased health complications.

He commended the alumni body for stepping in where government and other institutions had not, and called on other organisations to emulate the gesture by supporting vulnerable members of society.

Also speaking, Barr. Benson Munaonye expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the wheelchair would greatly enhance his independence. He described the donation as a demonstration of true brotherhood and compassion.

Obioha used the occasion to call on all pioneer alumni members to remain active in the association’s activities. He emphasised the importance of unity and collective contribution to the continued development of the university, which he said played a vital role in shaping their lives.

The event concluded with renewed commitments by members to strengthen their bond and support one another, while contributing meaningfully to the growth of Imo State University.
