In collaboration with the government of Imo State, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has flagged off the construction of a major road linking Ihitte-Umukabia, Umuneke, Ochicha and Obike communities leading to the Ngor Okpala Council Headquarters in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State.

The project, awarded to Roudo Nigeria Limited and Meadville Limited, is expected to boost connectivity and stimulate economic growth within the council area.

The flag-off ceremony Tuesday 17 February 2026, attracted government officials, community leaders and representatives of the commission, reflecting widespread support, encouragement and acceptance for the initiatives of the Project.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Physical Planning, Hon Barr. Enyinna Onuegbu, (Ebekuo) who was described as the facilitator of the project, commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for what he termed sustained infrastructural development in Ngor Okpala.

Onuegbu noted that the governor had done great things to the people of Ngo okpala LGA and should be supported and encouraged not only the appointment of six commissioners from the area, a development he described as unprecedented, alongside other key appointments and doing greater infrastructure development as a show of love in the Valentine’s Season and beyond.

He also highlighted some completed infrastructure projects, including the expansion of the airport road in Ngor Okpala from a two-lane to a four-lane highway with street lighting, as well as the installation of streetlights in Zion City, Mbaishi an established new city in Imo State.

According to him, the improved infrastructure has triggered rapid development in the area. “Within one year, Zion City has witnessed the construction of over 70 storey buildings, while commercial activities have expanded significantly,” he said.

The commissioner described the Ihitte-Umukabia–Umuneke–Obike road as a strategic entry route to the council headquarters and expressed optimism that its completion would attract additional development projects to the area.

He also commended industrialist, Chief Tony Chukwu (Onweghi Ihe kariri Chineke), for investing in local enterprise, including Victory Farms in Obike, with a reported production capacity of available two million day-old chicks and employment of the villagers in his farm.

In his remarks, the Imo State Director of the NDDC, Barr Patrick Ogberuo, said the flag-off and site handover for the Umuneke–Umueme–Ochicha–Obike road project (Lots 1 and 3) marked a significant milestone in the commission’s efforts to enhance road infrastructure in the state.

He underscored the importance of road infrastructure to socio-economic development, noting that improved roads facilitate access to markets, schools, farms and healthcare facilities.

“This is not just about constructing a road, but about investing in the future of these communities. When completed, the project will enhance the safe movement of goods and services and stimulate economic activities,” he said.

Barr Patrick urged the contractors and engineers handling the project to adhere strictly to quality standards, safety regulations and the stipulated timeline. He also called on host communities to cooperate with contractors and safeguard the project.

Officials present at the ceremony included the Head of Project Monitoring, Engr. Nnamdi Ezeifedi; Head of Community and Rural Development, Ms Jennifer Polycap; Architect Obioma Amaefule; and other NDDC staff.

A representative of Meadville Limited assured residents that the project would be completed within three to four months, describing it as a potential “signature road” for the area, while appealing for continued community support.

Also speaking, Chief Val Okere (Amadioha Ngor Okpala), a commissioner in the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), thanked the governor for fulfilling his promises to construct the roads and expressed confidence in the NDDC’s capacity to deliver quality work.

Similarly, the Apex Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ngor Okpala, Oke-Nze Sylvester Obinna, who prayed fervently for the State First family lauded Governor Uzodimma for what he described as his commitment to the development of the area, urging residents to protect the project to ensure its successful completion.

Responding to the State government good gesture to Ngo okpala LGA Hon. Mrs. Chika Ibekwe,Executive Chairman of the Council, expressed her appreciations to the governor Senator Hope Uzodimma for his magnanimity and good administration in the State and promised to help the Construction Company in the area of equipment security.
