PROFESSOR NNAMDI ONYEKA OBIARAERI, SAN: AGUNA-ECHEMBA, OWELLE OKIGWE AND THE MAKING OF THE FIRST ACADEMIC SENIOR ADVOCATE OF NIGERIA FROM OKIGWE ZONE
By Emma Madumere
History was made today, Monday, October 12, 2026, at the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Abuja, as the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) formally conferred the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, on Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri.
With that conferment, Prof. Obiaraeri did not just wear silk. He broke a jinx. He became the first academic lawyer from Okigwe Zone of Imo State to attain the revered rank of SAN, and the only academic among the 68 lawyers elevated to the Inner Bar in the 2026 exercise.
The 2026 list comprises 67 advocates and one academic, Professor Obiaraeri. His elevation was approved at the 174th Plenary Session of the LPPC held under the Chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, GCON, and announced by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Eniola Akanbi. e1724755
For Ndi Okigwe, this is more than a personal achievement. It is a crowning moment for a zone known for brilliance, industry, and service. It is the story of Agunaechemba, the shield and defender of his people, and Owelle Okigwe, the pride of Okigwe, finally taking his rightful place among the legal titans of the nation.
Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri is not new to excellence. A renowned Professor of Law, author, and academic administrator, he has spent decades shaping minds, shaping policy, and shaping jurisprudence in Nigeria.
His classrooms have produced Judges, Professors, SANs, and policymakers. His books and articles are reference materials in law faculties across the country. In every lecture hall and seminar, he taught with a rare blend of intellect, clarity, and moral conviction.
The elevation to SAN for an academic is not automatic. The Council of Legal Education and the LPPC only confer it on those who have made “distinguished contributions to the development of law.” Prof.Obiaraeri qualified on all counts: scholarship, integrity, advocacy, and service to the Bar and the Bench.
The title Agunaechemba means “the shield and defender of the people.” It fits him perfectly.
Beyond academia, Prof. Obiaraeri has been a voice for Okigwe Zone and for justice. He has used his knowledge not just to teach law, but to defend communities, mentor youths, and provide leadership in critical moments.
He is the kind of leader who stands in the gap in policy rooms, in community meetings, and in the courts of public opinion. Agunaechemba does not run from challenges. He confronts them with wisdom.
Owelle speaks of home, of pride, of sonship. As Owelle Okigwe, Professor Obiaraeri carries the hopes of an entire zone on his shoulders.
For years, Okigwe Zone has produced great doctors, engineers, politicians, and businessmen. But the academic silk had eluded us until today.
By becoming the first academic SAN from Okigwe Zone, Prof. Obiaraeri has opened a new chapter. He has shown our young lawyers that the peak is reachable. That with hard work and integrity, a boy or girl from Okigwe can wear the same rank as the giants of the Bar. This is legacy.
What does it take to become the first Academic SAN from Okigwe Zone?
It takes decades of reading, writing, and teaching.
It takes cases handled pro bono, opinions written for government, and policies influenced.
It takes character. The Bar does not give silk to those who chase it. It gives silk to those who earn it through service.
Prof.Obiaraeri earned it. Quietly, Consistently, and Excellently.
Today, when young lawyers in Okigwe wear their wigs and gowns, they will remember that one of their own sat at the highest table. That one of their own, an academic, was found worthy at the Supreme Court today.
The conferment of Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri, Agunaechemba, Owelle Okigwe, as SAN is significant for many reasons:
We now have representation at the inner bar. Our voice in the temple of justice is louder. It proves that the university is not outside the legal profession. Scholarship and advocacy can and should meet. It reinforces the ideal that the law rewards merit, not just noise.
As he takes his seat among Senior Advocates of Nigeria today, we pray that God grants him more wisdom, more strength, and more grace to continue to serve.
Congratulations, Prof. Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri, SAN, Agunaechemba, Owelle Okigwe.
Okigwe is proud. Imo is proud. Nigeria is proud.
Silk and Honor. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
