Stop Destroying People’s Image, Group Warns NURTW Imo Chairman’s Detractors

By Anselem Anokwute

A group of concerned leaders in the Imo State transport sector has condemned what it described as deliberate attempts to tarnish the image of the Imo State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Ikenga Jeff Eze, JP, popularly known as La Jeff.

The group cautioned those behind the alleged smear campaign to desist from actions capable of undermining the leadership and progress recorded by the union in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the group, its leader, Comrade Clifford Ubawuike, reacted to recent reports published by some Imo-based newspapers and online platforms, which allegedly accused Comrade Eze of misconduct and sharp practices capable of causing crisis within the union.

Ubawuike described the reports as false, ill-motivated and calculated to discredit the leadership of the NURTW in Imo State, stressing that those behind the allegations were enemies of peace and progress within the union and the state at large.

In a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, December 14, 2025, Ubawuike dismissed claims of internal crisis, unlawful collection of funds, misallocation of transport offices and dissatisfaction among union members as baseless and unfounded.

According to him, the allegations deliberately ignored the stability, unity and progress the union has enjoyed since Comrade Eze assumed office.

“The insinuations making the rounds are false and misleading. They are the handiwork of individuals who are either ignorant of developments within the union or are bent on sabotaging its leadership,” the statement read.

“On the contrary, members of the union are satisfied with and fully supportive of the leadership of Comrade Ikenga Jeff Eze,” it added.

Ubawuike noted that Eze’s leadership has been marked by discipline, unity of purpose, growth and improved welfare for transport workers across the state.

“Under his stewardship, the NURTW in Imo State has recorded significant progress, strengthened transport operations and aligned effectively with the development agenda of the Shared Prosperity Administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma,” the statement further said.

The group maintained that the alleged crisis was a fabrication by individuals who are not members of the union but are intent on undermining both the NURTW and the state government.

It urged members of the public to disregard what it described as falsehoods and misrepresentations in the reports, and instead acknowledge the positive impact of Comrade Ikenga Jeff Eze’s leadership on the transport sector in Imo State, including initiatives such as the first-ever NURTW Inter-Branch Football Competition among road transport workers in the state.
