FIDA Imo Denies Allegations of Bias, Says Association Is Committed to Due Process

The Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA), Imo State Branch, has firmly denied recent allegations accusing the association of bias and undue interference in an ongoing child-custody matter in Owerri. The organization described the claims as misleading, unfounded, and capable of undermining public confidence in institutions established to protect vulnerable persons.

In reaction to reports suggesting that FIDA influenced decisions of the Family Court and acted on an unverified petition involving allegations of child molestation, the association clarified that it does not—and cannot—determine judicial outcomes. According to FIDA, its role in such cases is strictly limited to offering legal support, guidance, and referrals in accordance with the law.

A spokesperson for the association noted that FIDA receives numerous petitions daily from women, children, and vulnerable groups. “Our procedures require that complainants be directed to the appropriate authorities or courts where proper investigation and adjudication can take place. FIDA has no power to pre-judge any matter or impose decisions on any court,” the statement explained.

The association also addressed claims that a member allegedly boasted about having influence over the Family Court. FIDA described such assertions as “false, unverified, and inconsistent with the organization’s values,” emphasizing that no member is authorized to speak in a manner that suggests institutional favoritism or interference.

“FIDA Imo operates under strict ethical standards. We do not interfere with judicial processes, and no court bases its decisions on FIDA reports. Any comments attributed to any individual do not represent the official position of the association,” the statement added.

Regarding the allegations of child molestation that triggered the controversy, FIDA maintained that only law-enforcement agencies and the courts are empowered to investigate and determine the veracity of such claims. The association reiterated that both parties are presumed innocent until proven otherwise and urged the public to allow the legal process to run its course without sensationalism.

FIDA further warned against attempts to tarnish its reputation due to misunderstandings surrounding its mandate. “Our duty is to ensure access to justice, particularly for women and children. Any insinuation that we act outside the law is both inaccurate and unfair,” the group stated.

As the matter proceeds in court, FIDA encouraged all involved parties to rely on established legal channels rather than media speculation. The association reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality, justice, and the protection of human rights.
