A 300-level Law student of Imo State University, Comrade Alfred Jacinta Chinedu, has declared her intention to contest for the position of Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in the 2026 national convention.

Chinedu made her declaration in Owerri before South-East stakeholders and leaders of NANS, where she outlined her vision to restore the association to what she described as its “former glory” and ensure improved welfare and representation for Nigerian students.

The aspirant, who is also a graduate of History and International Relations from the University of Uyo, pledged to deploy her knowledge of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in managing student affairs and fostering unity within the student body.

Speaking at the event, Chinedu said her ambition was driven by a genuine desire to serve and strengthen the students’ leadership structure. She promised to review the NANS constitution where necessary, embark on consultations across tertiary institutions nationwide to understand students’ challenges, and ensure that opportunities and entitlements due to students are adequately delivered.

“This position is not a mere ambition but a call to service. I am committed to serving Nigerian students with dedication and integrity,” she said, adding that her emergence would be in the overall interest of Nigerian students.

In his remarks, former Special Adviser to the Governor of Imo State on NANS Matters and South-East Stakeholders Chairman, Dr. Casmir Okoroafor Nneji, described Chinedu as a capable and reliable leader whose aspiration should be supported.

He noted that her track record, particularly her performance as Secretary-General of NANS Zone F, demonstrated her competence and commitment to the union.

Also speaking, South-East NANS Stakeholders Chairman, Hon. Chidi Aguocha, expressed confidence in her leadership capacity and called on stakeholders across the zone to rally support for her candidacy.

Several student leaders and stakeholders, including Comrade Victor Ezenagu, Engr. C.C. Ijeoma, Comrade Brendan Ijezie Ikenga of the Imo State University Students’ Union Government (SUG), Barr. Chidi Ugwoegbulam, Comrade Olaniyi Omoba, and the SUG President of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Comrade Odinakachi Pius Chikwado, commended her courage and leadership qualities, urging broader consultations across other zones to galvanise national support.

Imo State NANS Stakeholders Chairman, Comrade Opara Christopher, lauded her decision to vie for national office and assured her of the state’s backing, citing her previous contributions to the association.

The declaration event drew key NANS stakeholders and student leaders from across the South-East, as consultations continue ahead of the 2026 convention.
