The Leaders and Stakeholders of People’s Democratic party (PDP) in Okigwe Zone of Imo State has unanimously and jointly resigned their collective Membership from the Party over the National Leadership of Party abysmal failure, gross misconduct and inability to retain major opposition Political Party.

In a joint press briefing, the People’s Democratic Party Okigwe Zonal Committee, on Tuesday April 23, 2024, under, Hon. Mrs Amarachi Owuamanam Former Okigwe Zonal Chairman PDP, Sir Stanley Ekezie (Akajimba) former Member South East Zonal Executive PDP, expressed dissatisfaction with the ugly development in the party and explained that the Leaders and the Stakeholders of the Party in Okigwe Zone can’t tolerate or condone the overbearing negligence and recklessness abandonment and poor decisions making by the Party’s BOT and National Working Executive Committees.

In the release the resigned members said that the major reasons for their decisions is to make a good, favourable and visionary move for the interest of the Zone.

According to them,” sequel to recent occurrences and happenings in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), We the Okigwe Zonal Committee and it’s top Leadership at an emergency meeting held on Tuesday,23 April 2024, have arrived at the conclusion that the developments witnessed at the recent Board of Trustees (BOT) National Caucus and National Executive Committee meetings respectively, at Abuja have indubitably demonstrated that hitherto formidable PDP has from every indication, not only failed to function as a strong and virile opposition party but has rather set itself on a collision course with complete failure and decline”.

Those of us in the South East and in Imo State in particular have had to contend with a contrived, prolonged and ongoing crisis, which the National Leadership of the Party, despite several representation and entreaties on the matter has ignored, neglected or refused to resolved. All of these inevitably culminated in the dismal and disgraceful results recorded by the party during the off-season governorship election in November 11, 2023, over which the PDP at the national level is still playing the ostrich”.
“As a consequence, therefore and in consideration of these acts of disdain and disregard for the Leadership of the South East PDP, we have unanimously resolved to tender our individual and collective resignations from the party, through our respective Ward Chairmen across the six Local Government Area of Imo North Senatorial District (Okigwe Zone). We will in due course make public our next political step after deliberations and widely consultations on the issue”.

In his response, Chief Chris Okewunonu former Imo Secretary to the State Government and immediate past Chief of Staff Government House Owerri Imo State, expressed his satisfactions with the decision of the Zone and pointed out that the Zone has been Neglected and insulting by some individuals who thought that the leadership of the party is their personal property.

He mentioned that Chief Engr. Charles Ugwu, the former Party State Chairman, was giving assault severally and intimidated by the same elements and thanked his people for taking a bold step.

According to him, the leadership of the Zone has taken the bold step to save their faces from the shameful and disgraceful outings of the recent People’s Democratic Party national leadership and thank the party in the past for providing some of them the opportunity to serve the people.
