As Commissioner for Commerce, Abazu Came on Inspections, Set to Visits Other Market in Imo State

The Contractor handling the Eke Ukwu Owerri Modern Market Project, Engr. Obinna Obiekweihe has expressed confidence to deliver the project within the expected time to be commissioned by the governor Senator Hope Uzodimma before December 2024.

Engr. Obiekweihe stated this on Wednesday, 22 May 2024 during the site inspection exercise by the Commissioner for Commerce Trade and Investment Dr Chika Benson Abazu at the popular Eke Ukwu Owerri Modern Market Douglas rd Owerri Imo State.

According to him, the project which is a state-of-the-art commercial hub, designed to operate 24/7 and to serve both locals and tourists as the market is expected to boost Imo State’s economy and elevate commercial activities in Owerri as he promised timely delivery of the project.

Although the project is led by the consortium firm Amanda Global Integrated Project/AEG Construction Limited, according to him, “despite facing challenges, the firm is committed to delivering high-quality work as he took the commissioner and his enturage round the facility including the Principal Secretary and some Directors in the Ministry.

The market will have various facilities”. including, 1,728 units of retail shops, 340 units of specialized shops, 72 warehouses, 12 cold rooms, 240 open stalls/lockup shops, Four banks, A fire and police post, Public toilets, Water tank, An ATM gallery, An incinerator, car Park and Open stalks, Link Roads within and outside the market “.

The Commissioner for Commerce Trade and Investment Dr. Chika Benson Abazu, who expressed satisfactions with the level of work done and called on the contractors to expedite action to enable the governor Senator Hope Uzodimma, the opportunity to commission the said facility before the end of the year or December 2024 .

In his responses, Dr Abazu stated that Eke Ukwu Owerri Modern Market remains one of the State of the art facility and a symbol for economic growth and development,”. ‘We urged the contractors to move forward in action to deliver the project as at when due to enable our people make adequate use of the market as it is going to create more employment and business opportunities for the people”.

“Rebuilding Eke-Ukwu Modern Market is a landmark and a signatory project of Imo State Government as the market is designed to operate 24/7, serving both the locals, tourists and visitors in Owerri, Imo State.

According to him, the project has an impressive design aligning with Governors vision to make the State great again.

Despites expressing satisfaction with the progress, the Commissioner called for durability and quality project delivery and warned against slow pace of work by urging the contractors to expedites action to enable prompt and timely completions of the work.

The inspections exercise was bolstered and witnessed by Engr. Chinonso Akwaeke, a prominent Imo State Market Developer and a Sub Contractor in the Market and other Owerri Municipal Market Executives members and some Chairmen including the pioneer ISAMATA State Chairman, Hon. Joe Odikanwa, Relief Market, Hon. Kelechi Chikere, World Bank Market, Hon. Mrs Tina Ugoezi and Many others, who came in solidarity with the governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma’s passion to rebuild the Eke Ukwu Owerri Modern Market which was unbruptedly demolished and destroyed by the previous government and expressed happiness to the governor for the appointment of, Dr Chika Benson Abazu as the Commissioner for Commerce Trade and Investment Imo State.

Hon. Odikanwa used the medium to welcome the commissioner officially to the State visa-vie the Eke Ukwu Owerri for the auspicious inspections exercise and promised that the traders in the State will remain close and supportive to enable him succeed.

While the Commissioner, Dr Abazu, thanking them for the show of love and encouraged them to continued to support the Governor Uzodimma’s Shared Prosperity Administration in the State.

He called on the traders to get ready to receive him as he has started visitation of all the markets in the State for an on the spots facilities assessment and inspections exercise to enable him Served the State better.
