IMO STATE GOVT BANS ILLEGAL MOTOR PARKS, LOADING AND OFF-LOADING ACTIVITIES AT ASSUMPTA CATHEDRAL/CONTROL POST FLYOVER

Orji and Amakohia Flyovers Given ONE-Month Ultimatum

By Anselem Anokwute in Owerri

The Imo State Ministry of Transport has officially prohibited all illegal motor parks, as well as the loading and offloading of passengers or goods, in and around the Assumpta Cathedral/Control Post Flyover, following its recent commissioning.

In a statement released by the Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Hon Emeka Okoronkwo, the ministry announced a total ban on all unauthorized commercial transport activities at the Control Post Flyover. Additionally, commercial operations at the Orji and Amakohia Flyovers have been given a grace period of one months to vacate or risk strict legal action.

Hòn Okoronkwo warned: “Henceforth, commercial vehicle operators who violate this directive will be apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law.”

The Ministry has also directed the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and all commercial vehicle operators to restrict their activities to only government-approved motor parks.

This directive is part of the Imo State Government’s broader efforts to sustain the development agenda of Dist. Senator Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo state, whose administration has made significant strides in road infrastructure and the establishment of modern motor parks across the state — including the newly built facilities at Onitsha Road, Aba Road at Naze junction in Owerri North LGA, and the Chukwuma Nwaoha Motor Park.

To ensure full enforcement, members of Imo State Traffic management Authority (ISTMA) as Special Taskforce have been mandated to monitor compliance. Their job starts immediately with the closure of illegal parks within the restricted areas, such as the Peace Mass Transit Terminal at Control Post.

In a related development, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, has issued a directive to all property owners hosting illegal motor parks or other unauthorized activities. They are urged to convert such properties to lawful use to promote urban development and avoid potential government action, including seizure.

All stakeholders and the general public are expected to ensure full compliance with these directives to drive home the government 3R mantra.
